Ibexes

The King of the Alps

After the Alpine ibex became extinct in Switzerland, reintroduction began in the early 20th century. In 1961, this was also authorised for the Pilatus region. Initially, animals were captured on Piz Albris (canton of Grison) and released on the Mattalp. Around 40 years later, a further 10 ibexes were released, this time from the canton of Valais. Around 100 animals now live in the ibex colony on Mount Pilatus.
