How long does a hike up to Pilatus take?
The hike takes about 5 hours from Kriens or Alpnachstad.
When is the best time for a hike on Mt Pilatus?
The hiking season usually lasts from May to October - depending on snow conditions. Hikes to the summit, to Pilatus Kulm, are only recommended from mid-June. Until then, many hiking trails, especially at higher altitudes, are still covered in snow. The so-called "Pilatus Putzete" usually takes place on the third Saturday in June. On this day, the hiking trails are repaired from winter damage.
Some lower-lying routes, such as those around Fräkmüntegg, may be accessible earlier depending on the snow conditions. However, it is important to find out about the current conditions in advance.
Do I need special equipment for a hike on Mt Pilatus?
Good shoes, weatherproof clothing and plenty of water are sufficient for easy hikes. For more challenging tours, we also recommend appropriate hiking boots, hiking poles, maps or a hiking app.

Do I have to buy the ticket for the train or cable car in advance?
No. You can buy tickets for the cogwheel railway or the cable car on site at any station. Alternatively, you can also buy your ticket spontaneously online. However, it is advisable to reserve a seat Link opens in a new tab. for the cogwheel railway, as waiting times can occur when there are large numbers of visitors.
Is hiking on Mount Pilatus also suitable for families?
Yes, there are several family-friendly hiking trails, e.g. around Krienseregg or Fräkmüntegg (difficulty levels T1 and T2).

Are there official fireplaces?
Yes, there are several fireplaces around Mount Pilatus that invite you to barbecue and linger. These are usually easily accessible along the hiking trails and some are even equipped with seating. There are no fireplaces on the summit, Pilatus Kulm.
Firewood is available at the fireplaces in Krienseregg (PILU-Land) and Fräkmüntegg (rope park and Drachenalp).
